What Is PP Plastic? Heat Resistance, Sterilization and Pharmaceutical Packaging
When a bottle must survive autoclave sterilization at 121°C or hold aggressive formulas, PP is the material packaging engineers reach for. Polypropylene is the specialist of the plastics family: heat-resistant, chemically stable and remarkably light.
In this guide we explain what PP is, what makes it unique and where it is used — drawing on our experience manufacturing PP bottles since 2010.
What Is PP?
PP (polypropylene) is a thermoplastic identified by recycling code #5. It is one of the lightest common plastics and offers the best heat resistance of the four main packaging materials (HDPE, LDPE, PET and PP).
Key Properties of PP
- High heat resistance — capable of hot filling and sterilization
- Autoclavable — withstands steam sterilization at 121°C
- Excellent chemical resistance — acids, bases and solvents
- Low density — reduces shipping weight and cost
- Good moisture barrier — protects tablets and powders
PP in Pharmaceutical and Nutraceutical Packaging
PP is the standard material for pharmaceutical bottles. Its ability to withstand autoclave (121°C) and ETO sterilization makes it compatible with the filling and sterilization processes that regulated products require. Combined with child-resistant caps and tamper-evident closures, PP bottles meet the safety expectations of pharmaceutical and nutraceutical markets.
PP vs PET: The Clarity Tradeoff
The one area where PP falls behind PET is clarity. PP is naturally semi-translucent with a slightly milky appearance, and while clarified PP grades exist, they never quite match PET's crystal transparency.
The tradeoff: PP gives you heat and chemical resistance, PET gives you shelf appeal. Many brands use PET for their consumer-facing products and PP for products that need sterilization or hot filling.
Other PP Applications
- Hot-fill beverages and syrups
- Household chemical and cleaning products
- Caps, closures and dispensing systems
- Cream jars and cosmetic containers
